The Exeter girls basketball team repeated a familiar early season pattern, falling behind 7-0 early and then 28-19 at the half. Fortunately the team also repeated the pattern of storming back in the second half. A spirited defensive effort by Maya Blake '17, Bella Edo '17, Michaela Corvi '17, and Peace Kabari '17, tenacious rebounding from Michaela Streep '17, and crafty play from Sammie Weaver '18, provided opportunities for Kabari and Jenna Clark '16 to score key baskets that turned the deficit into a lead halfway through the second half. Clark scored fourteen of her 26 points in the second half, and Kabari also added thirteen of her 16 after halftime. Streep added 8 points, and Sammie Weaver hit a pair of three pointers. On the perimeter, Peace Kabari '16, Michaela Corvi '17, and Michaela McCarthy '18 pressured Deerfield into numerous turnovers. Kabari (15 points) and Ella Johnson (12 points) '18 converted many of those turnovers into baskets. Exeter hopes to win its fifth straight Wednesday at Brewster. Submitted by Coach Kim |

Maya Blake '17 scored nine of her eleven points in the first half, while playing outstanding defense and setting the pace in transition. Peace Kabari '16 was relentless on both ends of the floor, and scored 16 first half points. In the second half, Michaela Corvi '17, Michaela McCarthy '18, Bella Edo '17, and Ella Johnson ' 18 (five assists, four rebounds, and two steals) helped contain Brewster's offense as Exeter cruised to the finish with a comfortable lead. 01/27/2016 | 4:30pm | Bradford Christian Academy | Home | 45-39
Big Red took on Bradford Christian Academy in a rematch of two evenly matched teams. Three weeks ago Exeter won a tight game, 44-39. This time, BCA broke out on top and held the lead for the most of the first half and led 19-18 at the half, despite an intense full court Exeter defense that frustrated the visitors. In the second half, Exeter took a slim lead but BCA twice seized a five point lead, at 31-26, and then again at 36-31. Again, it was the defense that sparked rallies, and Big Red closed with a 14-3 run that put away a stubborn and talented BCA squad, 45-39. Maya Blake '17 scored two key baskets late, Ella Johnson '18 hit a big three, Jenna Clark '16 scored twelve of her fifteen points in the second half, and Peace Kabari' 16 took over the end of the game with key rebounds and timely steals, in addition to a team high seventeen points. 01/30/2016 | 1:00pm | Thayer Academy | Home | 65-54
On Saturday, the Exeter Girls basketball team faced a resurgent and dangerous Thayer squad fresh off impressive victories over strong opponents. Big Red was equal to the challenge, playing some of its best basketball of the season over the first eight minutes of the half. An efficient and quick strike offense was paired with energetic defense, particularly from Ella Johnson '18 and Mish Streep '16 who locked down Thayer's sharpshooting guards and Peace Kabari '16 who neutralized the opponent's top player. Exeter seized a 25-8 lead and went into halftime up eleven points. In the second half, Thayer's aggressive offense mounted rallies, but Exeter went on offensive runs of its own, with eight players scoring led by Kabari (21 points), Jenna Clark '16 (16 points), and Maya Blake '17 (13 points). The team's seventh victory in a row capped an undefeated month in which the team established an identity of toughness and defensive intensity. Exeter looks to continue its strong play against a very good Governor's Academy squad. Submitted by Coach Kim |
02/03/2016 | 2:30pm | Governors Academy | Away | 65-51
Exeter went on the road to face a tough Governor’s Academy squad that came into the game with an 11-4 record. The two teams exchanged baskets and traded the lead for much of the first half, but as in recent games Exeter’s defense intensified, limiting the opposition’s scoring and creating transition opportunities. The girls went into halftime with the biggest lead of the half, seven points, at 29-22. They then scored the first four points of the second half to build a double-digit lead that they held for most of the remainder of the game. Peace Kabari ’16 led all scorers with 18 points and 9 steals and Jenna Clark ’16 added 15 points. Both players had foul trouble in the second half and had to sit for extended minutes, but another recent pattern emerged with Exeter getting contributions from many different players. A total of eight players scored and while Kabari and Clark were on the bench, Big Red held its lead behind scoring from Mish Streep ’16 (10 points) and Maya Blake ’17 (10 points) and tenacious defense from Michaela Corvi ’16, Michaella McCarthy ’17, and Bella Edo ’17. The team cruised to a 65-51 victory. Exeter will look to extend its eight game winning streak this weekend with a tough back to back against rival Andover on Saturday and an impressive Tilton squad on Sunday. Submitted by Coach Kim |
02/06/2016 | 2:30pm | Andover | Home | 42-46 loss
A streaking Exeter squad had won eight straight games heading into its game against rival Andover. The girls got off to a strong start, opening up a 20-9 lead and went into halftime ahead 27-20. In the second half, Exeter struggled to execute on the offensive end, plagued by turnovers and fouls, and Andover gradually edged closer, taking advantage at the free throw line and with opportunities in the post. A spirited Andover team was also quicker to loose balls and hurt Exeter on the boards. After more than a month of excellent play, the team suffered the consequences of a letdown. Jenna Clark '16 led all scorers with 16 points and Peace Kabari '16 added 13. Submitted by Coach Kim |
02/07/2016 | 1:45pm | Tilton School | Away | @ Worcester Showcase 49-79 L
Less than 24 hours after a deflating defeat to Andover, the team headed to Worcester to play a neutral site game against a very tough Tilton School squad at an eight-team college showcase. Exeter hung in for the first few minutes, but this Tilton team is among the best teams in the region, and its full court defense harassed Exeter into a series of turnovers and a barrage of three pointers and drives to the basket pushed Tilton's lead to 45-18 at the half. Exeter regrouped at the half and played some good stretches of tough defense and efficient offense before falling 79-49. The two teams play again, providing the girls with an opportunity to show improvement and demonstrate resilience. Submitted by Coach Kim |
02/10/2016 | 3:00pm | New Hampton School | Home | 54-59 L
After two tough losses, Exeter's schedule provided no reprieve as the team hosted perennial basketball powerhouse New Hampton. The team entered knowing that it would take a strong effort to have a chance to win. Exeter started the game strong, containing New Hampton's dangerous offense, but missing on some opportunities offensively. New Hampton opened up a double digit lead, but Exeter clawed its way back behind excellent team defense and sharpshooting from Jenna Clark '16 and determined play from Peace Kabari '16. The team went into halftime with a one point deficit, 25-24, and renewed confidence. The second half was a rugged, physical struggle. Exeter pulled ahead briefly but New Hampton countered and executed more effectively at the end, defeating Big Red 59-54. The team can be proud of its noble effort as it again resembled the team that dominated the month of January. Peace Kabari '16 led all scorers with 25 points, Jenna Clark '16 added 12, Nora Epler '16 chipped in 4 key points off the bench, and Maya Blake '17 played a punishing post game on both ends of the floor. 02/13/2016 | 1:30pm | Worcester Academy | Home | 57-80 L
The girls continued their run of games against the top teams in the region. This time Big Red faced a Worcester Academy team that came into the game with a 16-2 record. As in the previous two games against elite competition, Exeter played tough and the first ten minutes of the game was a back and forth contest with both teams exchanging leads. Near the end of the first half, Exeter was hurt by turnovers and transition baskets by Worcester that opened a double digit lead for the visitors. Exeter also struggled to contain Worcester's center who scored 18 points in the first half. In the second half, the team shut down the opponent's inside game, but Worcester struck from the outside hitting six three pointers. Despite excellent play from Peace Kabari '16 and Jenna Clark '16 who scored 18 points each and from Maya Blake '17 who provided Exeter with a post presence on both ends of the floor on her way to adding 13 points, the team couldn't stop a talented Worcester squad. 02/17/2016 | 3:00pm | Tilton School | Home | 33-59
Ten days after Tilton routed Exeter at a Sunday showcase, the team had a chance to redeem itself on its home floor. Unlike the previous game, Exeter played an energized and physical style that frustrated an explosive Tilton team. Exeter's team defense was outstanding, and offensively the team was led by Maya Blake '17 who scored ten of her thirteen points in the first half. In its prior game, Tilton had led by 28 points at halftime. This time the two teams went into halftime with Exeter down just five points, 24-19. Unfortunately Tilton gradually pulled away in the second half as Exeter struggled to contain the visitors' many weapons and Big Red's open shots failed to fall. While the final margin of the loss was similar to its previous game against Tilton, this was a determined and intense effort from the girls that had little resemblance to the game just days before. 02/20/2016 | 4:00pm | Cushing Academy | Away | 43-26
After playing the most elite teams in New England over the previous two weeks, Exeter went on to the road to face a Cushing squad that was hungry for a victory. Always hard-working and well-coached, Cushing created opportunities on drives to the basket and packed itself into a tight zone defense that forced Exeter to work the ball patiently. Exeter countered with solid defense and scoring from six different players, and went into halftime with a 19 point lead. Exeter maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half, playing an effective if not always cosmetically pleasing game. The starting unit sat for most of the second half, though Ella Johnson '18 remained in the game to provide stability from the point guard position. Michaella McCarthy '18 played another excellent defensive game while adding four points and Sydney Lamb '17 scored two points and frustrated repeated attempts by Cushing to run isolation plays against her. In all, ten players scored for an Exeter team that looks to build on its victory on Wednesday at Holderness. Submitted by Coach Kim |
