BIG TIME: ART 500 +

BIG TIME: ART 500 +
Annual Student Art Exhibition
May 11-June 3, 2018

Reception: Wednesday, May 23, 6:00-8:00pm

BIG TIME: ART 500 + showcases the risk-taking inherent in creative discovery. Exeter students in ART 500 and ART 999 courses engage in an in-depth exploration of art materials and themes while developing their own body of work. Through experimentation, critique, research, self-direction, and many hours in the art studio, these students have explored themes important to them and created the comprehensive works that are part of BIG TIME: ART 500 +

Come and witness their journey - from sketchbook ideas to the finished works - both of which are featured in this exhibition highlighting the importance of the process of learning and refining that takes place in the visual arts classroom. After months of hard work, these students have reached the “BIG TIME” – a title that they chose for this exhibition to commemorate their time in the spot light.

In ART 500, advanced art students develop an individual portfolio based around a specific thematic inquiry. Their studio work is supplemented by weekly critiques and substantial feedback from art instructors. ART 999 is an independent study course where individual students who are ready to move beyond Exeter’s regular course offerings have the opportunity to develop work in a more sustained and intensive way.

Phillips Exeter Academy’s art instructors, who are also professional artists, have a selection of work on view in this exhibition as well. They have followed the same guidelines and creative process as their students in these advanced courses and have generously shared a piece of theirs for this exhibition.

The arts are a vibrant part of Academy life. Student works are displayed throughout the year in the Frederick R. Mayer Art Center, as well as in the Office of the Principal, Class of 1945 Library, the Lamont Health and Wellness Center, the Phelps Academy Center Agora, dorm common areas and a growing number of other locations on campus.

We are excited to celebrate the creative accomplishments of our students. Congratulations to the participating artists for such a provocative, engaging display!
