Investigation, research, and drive: INDY 500 is the result of a period of highly focused artmaking where Exeter students in ART 500 and ART 999 take on an in-depth exploration of art materials and themes. This exhibition will include a wide variety of work, from intricate ceramic sculptures and large-scale paintings to whimsical fashion designs and stop-motion animations. Exeter art instructors, who have followed the same guidelines as the students in these advanced courses, will also have work on view. Through experimentation, critique, research, visiting artists, and deep time in the art studio, INDY 500 showcases the dynamic results of an immersive creative process.

A note about our special preview hours:

This exhibition will be open in installments. May 5-24 will feature Fall term work. Spring term work will be on view starting May 25. Stop by during preview hours to see the installation unfold in front of your eyes, and return in late May to see the entire gallery filled to the brim with art!

About Art 500 and Art 999 Courses

Art 500: Advanced Studio Projects: Portfolio + Process provides experienced students a rich opportunity to pursue the successful completion of a professional portfolio of artwork.  Students focus on a particular art medium and create multiple works that explore a concept or idea. Under the guidance of the instructor, students set qualitative and quantitative goals for the term in their chosen studio concentration.

Art 999: Independent Study in Art is a specialized Art Department studio course that allows the opportunity for unique and individualized growth in the artistic process. This course is only offered to highly qualified students who seek to study beyond Exeter’s art curricular offerings and is taught at the college level. Students must apply to be enrolled in this competitive course due to its level of intensity and demonstrated investment in studio coursework at Exeter.
