Big Red co-captain Mia Glinn '20 has helped girls varsity volleyball get out to an 8-0 start for the second time in the past three seasons.

After appearances in the Class A finals match in each of the past two years, Exeter girls volleyball has proven to be one of the premier programs in New England and this season is no different. Big Red is off to a blistering start in the 2019 campaign, logging a perfect 8-0 record as they near the halfway point of the regular season schedule.

The 8-0 record is sparkling, but the dominant way they have achieved that spotless record is all the more impressive as they have surrendered just four sets on the season and have yet to travel into a fifth and deciding set in any match. To add another impressive layer to their feats, Big Red has yet to play a match on their home court.

Big Red faced what was their toughest test so far in 2019 this past Saturday at Loomis Chaffee. After the Pelicans topped Big Red in last year’s Class A final, Exeter was able to seek some regular season revenge with a 3-1 victory. Annah Shaheen ’20 powered the Big Red attack with a season-high 19 kills to go along with ten digs while Angelle Diamond ’20 added 13 kills and a team-best 17 digs. Fellow senior Mia Glinn ’20 added nine kills and nine digs for Exeter.

Big Red will finally open up play on their home court with a double-feature this weekend. Exeter will play host to Dana Hall on Friday at 4:45 p.m. before returning to Love Gym on Saturday when they square off with Northfield Mount Hermon at 2:30 p.m.

Big Red Review

Girls varsity volleyball is not the only undefeated team on campus this fall as the girls JV soccer team is also unbeaten through eight games with a 6-0-2 record. Ifeoma Ajufo and Marie Choi-Schattle have helped ignite an offense that has outscored their opponents by a 20-4 margin in their past five victories.

The girls varsity program earned a 2-2 draw in thrilling fashion last Wednesday as Abby Smith ’20 netted the game-tying goal – her second of the afternoon – with just three minutes left to play against a talented Brewster squad. Big Red suffered a 3-0 defeat at Milton on Saturday and a 2-1 loss at Pingree on Monday and will look to get back in the win column on Saturday against NMH.

Boys varsity soccer and boys JV soccer each enjoyed a two-win week last week with victories over Brewster Academy and New Hampton.

Jill Cloonan’s hat trick fueled girls varsity field hockey to a 4-0 victory over Brewster last Wednesday before falling to a tough Nobles team on Saturday, 2-0.

Varsity football found themselves on the bad end of another heartbreaker on Saturday, falling to Loomis Chaffee 13-7. With the game even at 7-7 late in the fourth quarter, Big Red had a punt return for a touchdown called back because of a holding penalty. Exeter was unable to score on the ensuing drive before the Pelicans connected for a 65-yard pass play to set up the game-winning touchdown.
