Understanding Violence, War & Peace

This course explores the history of violence, war and peace across the globe, from ancient to modern times. Readings may include selections from a variety of disciplines, such as anthropology, ethics, philosophy, psychology and sociology. Students may consider such questions as: Is there such a thing as a just war? Are humans naturally violent? How do societies avoid violence and maintain peace? What role does technology play in shaping violent behavior? Can justice be achieved through the use of violent means? Is peace a realistic possibility in a globalized world? Is there more to peace than an interim between wars?
