The World in the 20th Century

This course is an introduction to significant events in the 20th century. Students investigate cause, effect and change in places such as Europe, Africa and Asia (including the Middle East). One principal aim of the course is for students to develop a better understanding of the response of traditional societies to the impact of modernization on their values and customs. Another is to examine ideological conflicts of the modern world. Students also research contemporary problems that originated in the 20th century that demand creative and thoughtful solutions. Analytical skills, synthesis of conflicting viewpoints, conducting research in the Academy Library, participating in debates and writing historical essays are all emphasized in this course.
