The William B. Thompson Field House is a collegiate-level facility hosting multi-team competitions and a wide range of athletics and wellness programs. Our LEED Gold facility features flexible spaces that engage the entire school community.

Putting Exeter in the fast lane

Designed to benefit the entire community with recreational space, the 85,000-square-foot Thompson Field House opened in 2018 to provide year-round, highly advanced training facilities for the track and field teams and a dedicated wrestling center.

The ground floor contains a 200-meter track, four tennis courts, a multi-purpose infield, batting cages, and NCAA-regulation areas for shot put, high jump, long jump and pole vault. The mezzanine houses the 8,000-square-foot wrestling center and the Hahn Room, an events and meeting space with glorious views of South Campus.

Sustainable building

Designed by Architectural Resources Cambridge, the field house was built to LEED standards with a goal of gold certification. Like all major construction projects at Exeter, it was developed and erected using a nationally recognized protocol for sustainable construction. Key features include:

Wood from the running track in the Thompson Cage (this building’s predecessor) was reutilized as flooring in the Hahn Room.
The rooftop solar array, consisting of more than 1,500 panels and one of the largest in the state of New Hampshire, is designed to offset the majority of the building’s electric load and is projected to save the Academy $2 million over the system’s lifetime.

The building’s roof features a solar array consisting of 1,552 panels that generate nearly 600,000-kilowatt hours of electricity annually.

In 2019, the field house was recognized by the New Hampshire chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council as its Sustainable Building of the Year. The field house is LEED Gold certified, boasts a solar array consisting of 1,552 panels that generate nearly 600,000-kilowatt hours of electricity annually and includes salvaged wood, LED lighting and a 169-car parking garage with six electric vehicle charging stations in its construction.
