The Exeter Science Institute provides educators with an opportunity to practice Harkness teaching in the science classroom. This conference is for teachers of sciences – including chemistry, physics and biology – who are interested in learning through and leading authentic, student-driven discussions.
Readings and labs will be spread across all three disciplines, with a focus on physics and chemistry. In the morning, we will discuss daily readings and work in the lab, followed by a post-class reflection. During the afternoon, we will continue to develop laboratory-based approaches to Harkness teaching.
A typical conference schedule includes:
- Morning sessions from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Afternoon sessions from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Optional evening events: 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
