Exeter Student Service Organization is student-led and includes about 50 service-oriented clubs working with community partners. The mission: To provide direct service and support to communities, both locally and globally, and to learn from those experiences and carry that knowledge forward.

During the pandemic we have reduced the number of clubs and shifted to online service efforts to ensure safety for all.

With over half of the students participating in ESSO activities each year, there are many ways to connect with your peers and have an impact on the lives of others. ESSO is so popular we’ve given our volunteers a special name: ESSOnians.

My focus on global health and startups that have a tangible benefit to other people’s lives stems from my experience doing community service at Exeter."
Jason Kang ’12

For many of our students, ESSO programs become a main focus, even extending into summer and school vacations.

Here’s a sampling of our clubs and projects:

  • Children’s Videos, hosted on ESSO’s YouTube channel, focus on sports drills, science experiments, math explorations, dance and cooking lessons.
  • Essonians tutor youngsters virtually in a variety of academic subjects.
  • Operation Smile brings awareness of cleft palate in children to the community.
  • Paper Airplanes tutors English to Syrian refugees around the world.
  • Global Health Collaborative focuses on the impacts of the coronavirus around the world.
  • Relay for Life, an annual student-led event, supports the fight against cancer through awareness and donations.
  • Read aloud, brings to elementary-aged children books that celebrate diversity and inclusion, and champion those in society who traditionally have been marginalized.
  • Beach cleanup and trail maintenance works to keep local natural resources healthy.
  • Dog walking pairs students with employee dogs for an outing.
