Football - V

Exeter football has one of the richest traditions in all of high school football. Each year since 1878, Big Red squares off against our sister school Phillips Andover in what is the oldest high school rivalry in the country. Many former Big Red stars go on to enjoy successful careers at NCAA Division I and III programs, including schools in the Ivy League and NESCAC League. The team trains and practices inside the 8,000-seat Phelps Stadium. Home games are streamed free online.

After leading 6-0 at halftime, Big Red exploded for 29 second half points to run away from Suffield in a 35-7 season opening victory. Eddie Buehler powered the Exeter offense with three passing touchdowns while rushing for another. Brendan Logan hauled in a pair of Buehler passes for scores while Zion Simmons grabbed another. Isaiah Reece was dominant on the defensive side of the ball, picking off a pair of Suffield passes while also recording a strip sack.

Watch on Exeter Live Eddie Buehler threw for 338 yards and three scores, but Big Red's comeback effort came up just short in a thrilling matchup with Cheshire Academy. Trailing 21-6 at the half, Exeter scored four second half touchdowns but could not convert a game-tying two point conversion late in the fourth. Zion Simmons hauled in a pair of touchdown passes from Buehler while Johnny Getman grabbed another - a terrific 32 yard reception over two Cheshire defenders in the back of the end zone. Kai Honda rushed for a score and Ethan Moss connected for a pair of field goals.

Eddie Buehler ran for a score and connected on a beautiful pass to Isaiah Reese for a touchdown to lead Big Red to a 15-12 victory in sloppy, wet conditions at Taft this afternoon. Zion Simmons helped set up the offense with a kick return inside the ten yard line that led to a Big Red score. Jake Fredericks and Reid Burke anchored the defense and held a talented Taft offense in check all night long. Exeter is back home against Salisbury next week.

Watch Exeter at Deerfield Zion Simmons rushed for a touchdown on offense and scampered into the end zone following an interception for a pick-six to lead Big Red to a 21-14 victory on a rain soaked Saturday at Deerfield. Reid Burke also hauled in a score on a throw from Eddie Buehler while Kai Honda was dominant running the ball behind a strong effort from the offensive line. The Exeter defense, led by Simmons, Isaiah Reese, Mason Baldic, and Jake Fredericks stood tall all day long, including on a goal line stand in the fourth quarter. Ethan Moss was a perfect 3-for-3 on extra point attempts.

Watch Exeter at Williston Kai Honda and Zion Simmons had two scores apiece and Isaiah Reese and Johnny Getman each added a score of their own as Big Red picked up their fifth straight win of the season and ninth straight road victory. Reid Burke, Cordel Epale, and Jake Fredericks anchored a strong effort on defensive to limit a talented Williston Squad.

Watch on Exeter Live In the 142^nd matchup on the gridiron, Exeter capped an exciting day with a 47-20 victory over Andover. The win marks the third straight for Big Red in the series while also earning the Northeast Prep Football Conference outright championship. Exeter (7-1) will await to hear the possibility of a NEPSAC bowl game this week. Exeter got on the board first when Zion Simmons ’24 took a reverse for 20 yards and into the end zone for the lone score of the opening quarter. Andover would stake a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter on a 25-yard scoring scamper of their own, but from there it was all Big Red. Simmons broke away for a 58-yard touchdown run before Kai Honda ’24 plunged in from four yards. Isaiah Reese ’25 then took a screen pass 50 yards, breaking multiple tackles en route to the end zone as Exeter broke the game open with a 26-7 lead at the half. Johnny Getman ’24 hauled in a four-yard touchdown pass from Eddie Buehler ’24 before Big Red hit the ground running once again, as Reese exploded for a 51 yard score and Buehler added a touchdown on a keeper from six yards to secure the 47-20 victory.

NEPSAC Football Bowl Schedule Big Red lost a hard fought battle to a talented Choate squad, 17-14, in the Leon Modeste Bowl. Choate opened the scoring with a 41 yard field goal before following with a four yard run for a score to stake a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Choate would continue to add to their lead when they blocked an Exeter punt and recovered at the five yard line. The Wild Boars would score from five yards out to extend their advantage to 17-0 at the half. Exeter relied on their defense to claw back into the game, forcing Choate to punt throughout the third quarter. The Big Red offense took advantage when Kai Honda scampered for 40 yards that would set up a five yard touchdown pass from Eddie Buehler to Johnny Getman to cut the deficit to 17-7. Exeter turned defense into offense once again in the fourth when an interception by Isaiah Reese set up another Buehler to Getman scored to pull Big Red to within three, 17-14, with just three minutes remaining. An ensuing onside kick was picked up by Exeter, but was turned over to Choate on an illegal touching call. The Exeter defense forced Choate to punt once again, but the Big Red offense was not able to produce points on the final drive of the game. Reid Burke was outstanding for Exeter playing on both sides of the ball. Reid recorded a pair of sacks, an interception, several tackles to go with several receptions on offense.
