Biography
Growing up, Ms. Hobbie loved all things scientific, but after discovering her love of chemistry in college she decided she didn’t want to go on to work in industry. Having taught sailing as a teenager at a residential summer camp, she thought she might try teaching instead, and her first job was at the Taft School, in Connecticut. After graduate school and time in Germany with her family, she came to Exeter in 2001.
Ms. Hobbie teaches all levels of chemistry, but her favorite elective is Chemistry of the Environment. She was the longtime dorm head in Langdell Hall and now serves as chair of the Science Department. For many years she has coached the novice girls crew team, and she also advises the Chemistry Club. In a new role, she has joined an Academy-run mentor program with a charter school in Chicago.
Every other summer, Ms. Hobbie works for Teachers Across Borders in South Africa, an organization that provides professional workshops for rural math and science teachers. She loves hiking, skiing and backpacking with her family, and she is very involved with her local church.
