Sixteen Exeter students win national writing honors

The honorees combined for 31 medals in the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Sixteen students from Exeter combined to win 31 national medals in the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards announced Wednesday.

Isabella Alvarez '19 was awarded six medals, including four golds, for a selection of writing pieces, and Kendrah Su '22 was awarded three gold medals to lead the Exeter honorees. Rajrishi Das '19 also won three medals: a gold, a silver and a silver medal with distinction for his writing portfolio, which includes a $1,000 scholarship. 

Each of the 16 winners from PEA was recognized for writing in one of seven categories: poetry, short story, flash fiction, personal essay and memoir, critical essay or journalism. 

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity and talent of young writers and artists. Past honorees include artist Andy Warhol; writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote and Joyce Carol Oates; photographer Richard Avedon; actors Robert Redford, John Lithgow and Lena Dunham; and filmmakers Ken Burns and Richard Linklater.

All of the national winners will be honored in June at an awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
