Both the boys varsity basketball and boys varsity hockey teams earned victories in their respective NEPSAC tournaments on Wednesday night to advance to semifinal play on Saturday.

Hockey

The hockey team used a three goal second period to take down top-seeded Lawrence Academy with a 5-2 road victory. After falling behind 1-0 after the opening period, Paddy Bogart ’19 evened the score when he slammed home a loose puck in front of the Spartan net to put Big Red on the board.

Bogart’s goal gave Exeter some momentum as Collin Shapiro ’17 followed less than three minutes later with a breakaway goal to give Big Red its first lead of the night. Shapiro gathered a long pass from Kyle Jadatz ’18 and went top shelf to beat the Lawrence Academy goalie for the tally. Big Red caught a break just two minutes later when Paul MacDonald ’17 dumped the puck in from just outside the blue line, but the Spartan goaltender mishandled the puck to allow Exeter to stake a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Lawrence Academy would quickly cut the deficit back down to one with a power play goal early in the third period, but Exeter freshman goalie Ryan Welch ’20 came up huge down the stretch. Welch made several key stops in the final frame, but none bigger than with 75 seconds to go when he sent away a pair of Spartan opportunities with a crowd in front of the net to keep Exeter with a one-goal advantage.

Big Red potted a pair of empty net goals to seal the 5-2 victory. Exeter will move on and travel to the Rivers School on Saturday.

Basketball

The basketball team jumped ahead early and saw five players finish in double figures as they rolled past Noble & Greenough 82-59. Alex Swett ’19 came off the bench to provide a spark for Big Red as it built up an 18-point edge in the first half.

Exeter would extend that margin after halftime with strong team defense and hot shooting from the outside. Kyle Copeland ’17 led the scoring charge with 15 points while classmate Javante McCoy ’17 finished 7 of 8 from the free throw line on his way to 13 points. Jacob Grandison ’17 added 14 while Ben Swett ’17 poured in 13 for Big Red. Emmett Shell ’18 knocked down a pair of threes and finished with ten points off the bench.

Exeter will host Milton Academy on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Love Gym when they try to advance to the NEPSAC Class A Finals for the fifth time in the last six years.

Girls and Boys Diving

Big Red also had success in the pool on Wednesday as the boys and girls diving teams competed in the New England Championships hosted at Deerfield Academy. On the boys side, Maxx Murray '19 amassed a score of 257.7 to finish in 12th place while Will Ayscue '17 came in 14th with a score of 245.4. Andrew Dawe '19 finished 18th with a total score of 171.25.

On the girls side, Addie Millman '18 posted a score of 123.6 to place 23rd.
