William Coogan finished in 6th place in the freshman one mile.

William Coogan ’20 and Maggie Hock ’19 wrapped up their winter season this past weekend at the New Balance National Scholastic Indoor Championship. The duo travelled to New York City to represent Big Red and turned in a couple of excellent performances.

Coogan, who qualified for the event at the New England Championships, placed 6th overall out of a field of 30 runners with a time of 4:33.31 in the freshman one-mile run. Hock, who also qualified at New England’s back in February, finished in 12th place in the 800-meter run when she crossed at 2:13.63.

"In this season of transition due to the construction of our new facility, the coaches had braced themselves to have a bigger barrier between the student athletes and their best performances,” says Exeter head coach Hilary Coder. “William and Maggie seemed oblivious to that challenge. Will broke the prep record in the one mile, reset it three times, and then medaled at Nationals.”

“Maggie had her own journey studded with results that usually come later in a career. This tenth grader broke three school records at 600m (1:37.44), 800m (2:12.73), and 1000m (2:57.50). Maggie finished 12th among the best in the nation spanning all grades at Nationals. We are looking forward to this meet next year for Maggie and Will and, hopefully, a group of their teammates," adds Coder.
