The boys varsity basketball team advanced to the NEPSAC Class A Finals for the fifth time in the last six years after defeating Milton Academy 63-54 on Saturday afternoon at Love Gym. The second-seeded Big Red will square off with top-seeded Suffield Academy on Sunday at 2 p.m. on the campus of Rhode Island College.

Trailing 28-24 at the half, Exeter opened the second with a 22-9 run to create a 46-37 advantage with just over seven minutes left to play. The Big Red lead would dwindle down to three with 35 seconds to go, but Javante McCoy ’17 would knock down six straight free throws down the stretch to seal the game.

McCoy finished with 18 points while Jacob Grandison ’17 led Big Red with 22. Mitchell Kirsch ’17 knocked down three three-pointers on his way to 11 points.

Boys Hockey

The terrific season for the boys varsity hockey team came to a close this evening. After upsetting top-seeded Lawrence Academy 5-2 on Wednesday evening, the Big Red dropped a 5-2 decision to the Rivers School on Saturday.

Exeter got on the board first as Noah Maercklein ’17 finished a feed from Grey Betts ’19 to put Big Red up 1-0. Rivers would answer right back with a goal 90 seconds later and quickly grabbed a 2-1 lead following a power play goal. The Red Wings would connect once more in the period to take a 3-1 edge after one.

The hosts would go up 4-1 early in the second before Exeter’s Bobby Murray ’18 found the back of the net on a play assisted by Kyle Jadatz ’18. That would be all the offense Big Red would be able to muster on the afternoon while Rivers added another tally for the 5-2 final

Exeter, playing in the NEPSAC Stuart/Corkery (Elite 8) Tournament for the fourth straight season, has its season end with a record of 23-7-1 overall.
