Wednesday, July 29, 2009
7 p.m.
Rockefeller Hall, Academy Library
Exeter, NH (July 27, 2009)—On Wednesday, July 29, at 7:00 p.m., The Tony Carelli Quintet will perform as part of the Phillips Exeter Academy Library’s Summer Concert Series. This concert is the fourth in a series of five concerts hosted by the Friends of the Academy Library. The concert will be held in Rockefeller Hall in the Class of 1945 Library, located on Front Street. The event is free and open to the public.
The quintet will perform music of the “hard bop” jazz era, with local saxophonist Tony Carelli; Ken Cervenka on trumpet/flugelhorn; Jeri DiMarco on piano; Barry Smith on bass; and Peter Moutis, a 1976 graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, on drums. “Hard bop” music refers to a variety of jazz styles developed through the mid-1950s and 1960s, rooted deeply in bebop tradition with an intense rhythmic drive, and an infusion of blues and gospel influences.
Carelli graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 1979. Since then, he has led jazz groups in the Boston and New York areas, performing with Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Weeds, Tom Harrell and James Moody. Currently, he performs and teaches privately in the Boston area.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m., and is free and open to the public. For further information, please call Academy Reference/Music Librarian Andrew R.
