Exeter, NH (March 10, 2009)—Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, resident Max H. de La Bruyere, a senior at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH, was named a Morehead-Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. De La Bruyere was among 70 high school seniors selected—61 from the United States and nine international—three from Great Britain, three from Canada and one each from Austria, Hong Kong and Turkey.
Among the largest and most competitive scholarship programs in the United States, the Morehead-Cain Scholarship—formerly the Morehead Scholarship—pays all expenses for four years of undergraduate study, including the cost of a laptop computer and four summer enrichment assignments. The scholarship is valued at approximately $140,000 for each out-of-state student.
This year’s winners, announced this month by the scholarship’s trustees, were selected through a nomination and interview process that began last fall. De La Bruyere was one of more than 1,600 high school seniors who were nominated or applied for this scholarship. Selection criteria are leadership, academic achievement, moral force of character and physical vigor. Recipients are chosen by merit and accomplishments, not financial need. Winners have until April 13 to accept the scholarship.
