Biography

Stephanie Kay Girard grew up in Rhode Island, in the house her grandfather built. (The street bears her family’s name, in fact.) She stayed local, in New England, for her undergraduate work at Boston College, then went south to the University of Virginia for her master’s degree. Her first teaching job was in Virginia at Charlottesville High School, where she also coached boys and girls swimming and diving.

In 1986 Ms. Girard joined Exeter’s Math department. Here, in addition to her math classes, she coached boys JV swimming for many years. She has served as dorm head in Wheelwright Hall, adviser to Christian Fellowship, and as a long-time member of both the Admissions and Discipline committees. She has been honored twice with teaching awards by the school. She recently joined her colleagues as a teacher in the Exeter Math Institute, an outreach program that has taken her to Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Ohio and England.

Ms. Girard currently lives on campus with her husband, Jim, and their two children (Exeter classes of ’13 and ’18). Once a college swimmer, then an avid cyclist, she now keeps in shape by doing physical therapy to repair years of overuse. In her spare time, she loves taking walks with Jim, baking chocolate-chip banana bread (a much-loved treat for her advisees and students), and watching BPL and MLS soccer, an addiction brought on by her children's participation in and love of the game of soccer.
